General Norty Schwartz assumes command of the US Air Force: Welcome aboard Boss

General Norty Schwartz assumed the duty as Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force yesterday.  General Schwartz, welcome and good luck.  In a video message to Airmen here, he made the following points (paraphrased)

We will keep the Air Force promise to our Joint teammates and our families

Precision and reliability is our standard

Everyone contributes, but no one has greater value to our collective mission than another

Be proud of who we are and what we do for America, the Joint Team, the Air Force, Airmen and our families.

He said his promise was to lead from the front, strive to work hard, and maintain the same high standards

And along the way, we need to have have fun too.

Some quotes from his remarks throughout the day as reported in various news outlets: (Underline/italics is mine for emphasis)

  •  "Without trust, we are nothing," Gen. Norton A. Schwartz said to the crowd of about 600 people on the base's ceremonial lawn. "Trust must be earned, yet the American public trusts those in uniform. We will show ourselves worthy of the sacred trust our leaders, our joint brethren and the American people place in us, because this business is all about trust."
  • "There is much less room for poor performance and certainly for misconduct, We will be active on this and be surgical if that's what is needed."
  • "I think, fundamentally, our service is sound," It doesn't mean we're perfect. And we certainly have work to do, things to fix, fences to mend. . . . Those areas where others have found fault, we are going to work with a vengeance, and we'll tidy that up. And the United States Air Force will remain the finest air force on the planet."
  • (Regarding the nuclear mission) "It is a mission where anything less than perfection is not acceptable. And that is the standard, That certainly is the standard of the folks that brought that to us through the years, and we will return to that standard,"

Some things that stood out:

He seemed to back away from the slogan “Above All” and instead change to “For All” He continued to emphasize the Joint Team, something he is highly qualified with and highly regarded by the other services. He is promising accountability and assuring that he will hold himself to the high standards. I believe he will move quickly and I full expect personnel to be asked to retire very soon.

I will write some more thoughts soon, but this is very welcome news and as I said before, I wish General Schwartz and Secretary Donley the very best of luck and great success.
