Lt. Murphy in Afghanistan Navy Medal of Honor
Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy, who was killed leading a mission into the Afghan mountains in 2005, will be awarded the Medal of Honor. This mission was a four man reconnaissance element inserted to try and locate a Taliban leader. The element was compromised almost immediately and the ensuing fight killed Murphy and two of his men, with the only survivor, Marcus Luttrell, able to escape and evade, eventually getting harbor with an Afghan villager. Tragically, when a rescue force had been sent after them, an MH-47 Chinook was shot down, killing all, comprised of 8 SEALs and the aircrew of 8 Army soldiers from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regimnet. This is the first SEAL to be awarded Big Blue since Vietnam.
